Do most of you honestly feel that their is that much of a difference in all the Martial Art styles?

Meaning do you really think a chinese system of Wu Shu is really that much different than Shaolin or Hungar, or in Japanese Shotokan, Goju, Kyokushinkai, Kenpo?

Do you think they have MANY differences or just a few?

Do most of you honestly feel that their is that much of a difference in all the Martial Art styles?
Yes and no..

sorry.

Yes in that they all share the same basic fundamentals of kicking, blocking, striking , walking, breatheing

do they all do it the same way...NO.

that is why i say yes and no. The philosophies and techniques are different from art to art but the basic fundamentals are all near the same.

sorry its not a straight answer but its the one i offer.

And the above statement of being bigger is all a crock, im only 5'8 155# and ive taken down more lugs than smaller people. Id rather fight a 220 lb guy any day over another smaller guy!
Reply:almost always in a fight the grapplers like nijitsu, and olympic wrestling will win as it is hard to get a punch or kick to land before you both go to the ground.

biggest factor in who wins is almost always size of opponent. i don't care what martial arts an 120 pound guy knows he will get is butt kicked everytime by a 220 pound guy.

for practical fighting good technique is pulling the guys shirt up over his head - this is what hockey players do when fighting. works really well. Also grabbing the neck of the shirt is good and you punch with your free hand - give you the right distance to connect.

also if you go to the ground cardio is very important has people tire easily.
Reply:I studied a few arts over the last 30 years, Kenpo, Kuk Sool Won, Hapkido, juJitsu, %26amp;Wushu I feel there are slight differences in philosphies, but most of the moves %26amp; techniques are similar. Basically, they are all good but may emphasize a particular technique like joint locks %26amp; throws (Kuk sool, Hapkido, Aikido, Ju Jitsu) or mostly kicks %26amp; punches (Shotokan, Tae Kwan Do) Maybe traditional arts or modern "street combat" but basically all the same (a punch to the face, is a punch to the face whose to say it was a punch from Kenpo or Muy Tai.)
Reply:When it comes to Karate and Kung Fu the "basics" are the bridge that connects "all" styles.

(punches,kicks,blocks,etc)
Reply:o yeah.
Reply:they are different in every way that things can be different.
Reply:I have one style that I would consider myself of having a good understanding of (TKD.. yeah yeah don't laugh), went to a Shotokan school for a month... the style was very similar (but it was a terrible school) went to a boxing gym for 4 months and yeah.. it was much different than TKD... now taking MT..... and commiting myself to it because the instructor is very very good... I am finding out that all the things I learned in TKD work great (as long as the distance is right) but in Thai boxing range the blocks I learned are only effective 5% of the time, and when I get in TKD range the movements and parrys from MT and boxing are just about the same 5% effective.... a punch is a punch... a kick is a kick, but the thing to learn is when it is best to block, deflect, parry, dodge, or aborb the punch or kick depending on the spacing, is something no one style covers in great detail, and I suppose if you get "that damn good" at one style you can control the spacing... but it would take more years than the human life cycle allows... Ill try to illustrate my point further... If a boxer hold his gloves up and doesnt block a TKD side kick to the face it is a bad deal for him... If the TKD guy trys the side blocks for the boxers 4 punch combo he is done... and if the Muay Thai fighter gets either in the clinch.. they both just ate a knee and are sleeping together.... there is no best art.... if you could put the all into one and have a "super martial art" I believe it would be so complicated we could start as 10 years old and at 80 not understanding much of anything ... just my thought
Reply:a fights a fight no matter were your from your going to use your main limbs as weapons if there aint other ones available your fists legs knees elbows possibly even your head so no real major change but there is alot of different techniques that people believe are better
